Dracula, written by the Irish author Bram Stoker in 1897. We have chosen this novel because one of our main purposes is reading not only the "ancient" classics, but also the most "recent" ones. The novel tells the story of the famous vampire count Dracula and his attempt to move from Transylvania to England, and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and women led by Professor Van Helsing. The novel treats the role of women in Victorian culture, sexual conventions, immigration, colonialism, and postcolonialism.

hooked...
ResponderEliminarThough I haven't finished the book yet, I'm going to comment something here, so that Cris can go to Scotland without hating me xD
ResponderEliminarWell, this book is just amazing. The descriptions, the vocabulary, the characters... everything fixes perfectly. It's been a long time since the last time I've read such a well written book.
Regarding the story, it's engaging and I like the fact that it's presented as a sort of puzzle, since everything is told through diaries, letters, or even newspapers' articles. But I think everything is clear once you know how to join all the pieces of the puzzle. Besides, it lets you see what's happening from different points of view, which is really refreshing.
As far as the vampire world is concerned, I love it. It has nothing to do with the current vampire fashion (yes, I'm talking about Twilight). The vampires here are real vampires: they kill, they are evil, and whenever they appear, there is either blood or sex (or both...). And, of course, they don't sparkle.
Well, I think this is enough to make Cris happy before her trip. But I'll definitely go on with my analysis when I finish the book!
